Organizing Members with Social Media

This course provides an overview of the current landscape of social media and how it is being utilized in the union movement to facilitate electronic activism. Participants will learn the definition of social media, its growth over time, and how it can be used as a new tool to communicate with members and the public. Participants are also given the basic steps in building a social media plan and insight on how AFGE is using these tools at the national level. 

  • Participants will be able to recall the definition of social media, its history, and its current usage within the union movement.
  • Participants will be able to explain how social media can be used as a tool for electronic activism and communication within the union movement.
  • Participants will be able to apply basic steps to create a social media plan for their local.
  • Participants will be able to analyze the effectiveness of different social media strategies used by unions for member engagement and public outreach.
